23 Green St., Albanyville, ILGrace DavisGrace sprawled across her bed and flipped through the pages of her diary.  She carefully read a passage that she'd written a few days earlier and giggled when she remembered the runaway frog in biology class.  She turned to the next blank page and began to write...

Dear Diary,  I finally got to meet Dane Manchester tonight!  Oh, he is so witty and dashing.  I also found out he has a girlfriend.  She's Stephanie Lake's cousin, no less!  From what I saw, she's ever bit as snotty and rude as Stephanie can be.  Must be something in the water that family's been drinking...

Grace felt her eyelids grow heavy and soon the diary and pencil dropped from her hand as she drifted off to sleep...

"Grace, will you do me the honor of sharing this dance?" Dane asked as he took her hand.

"Oh, yes!"  Dane spun Grace onto the floor as her long ball gown flowed behind her.  Dane pulled her close and she rested her head on his shoulder.  The sky was clear and the stars were out.  It was so magical.

"Grace, I've been wanting to tell you something for a long time."  She gazed up at him and he smiled at her.  "Grace Davis, I love you.  I've loved you from the moment I first laid eyes on you.  Please tell me that you'll marry me.  I don't think I could stand it if you said 'no'."

"Oh, yes, Dane, yes!"  He kissed her deeply as the orchestra swelled in the distance.  As he held her tightly, Grace could spy Sara across the room sitting alone and utterly defeated.  Stephanie sat with her and kept handing her handkerchiefs  to wipe her tears.  Sara had lost Dane forever.  There was no way she could compete against the love that he and Grace shared.

Grace's eyes flew open as the dream faded and she was forced to return to reality.  Still groggy, she looked around her room in disappointment when no orchestra, no stars, and no Dane appeared.  It was just a dream, she thought.  But it could happen, couldn't it?  A man like Dane really could love me, couldn't he?

Trevor Callison2210 Elmwood Lane, Albanyville, ILTrevor pulled the sheet of paper from the typewriter and quickly crumpled it before tossing it to the floor.  It was a pattern that he'd followed for hours as he tried to work on his article for The Daily Post.  He stared at the pile of discarded ideas and slowly his mind began to drift from The New Deal to Grace DavisWhat in the devil is wrong with me?  Why can't I get her out of my head?  He got up from the desk and walked over to the window.  He looked out and saw the moon and stars and remembered the events on the dock.  What is it about her?  She's such as bundle of contradictions.  His thoughts turned to Lorraine.  He knew she was going to get hurt.  That was the last thing that Trevor wanted, but meeting Grace had made him realize that his feelings for Lorraine went exactly what he thought they were.  Sure, she was a wonderful woman and he considered himself very lucky to be the recipient of her love, but there was just something that wasn't quite right about their relationship.  His sudden feelings for Grace only proved that.  I can't hurt Lorraine, I just can't.  But why can't I get Grace out of my head?

Dane ManchesterRiverview NightclubDane walked in and went straight to the bar for a vodka tonic.  As he sipped his drink, he turned around and saw Stephanie sitting at the bar.  He smiled when he remembered what he knew about her and wondered why he hadn't thought of it before.  "Well, Stephanie, what are you doing in here at this time of night?  Don't you have school tomorrow?"

"Hello, Dane, I could ask you the same thing."  She tossed her hair over her shoulder and smiled at him.  "So what happened between you and Sara tonight?  She seemed a little upset when she got home."

"You know how she can be.  She blows things way out of proportion.  She always makes more out of things than they really are."  He paused for a moment as he considered his best course of action.  "But, let's not talk about Sara.  In fact, there's something I do want to talk to you about."

"And what would that be?"

"Well, I want to talk to you about Reginald Callison."   Dane smiled when he realized he had her undivided attention.  She grew increasingly nervous at the mention of Reginald's name.

"W-what would I know about Reginald?"

"Stephanie, I know all about your little fling with him."  Dane took another sip of his drink.

Stephanie Lake"I don't have any idea what you're talking about!"  She grew defensive.  How could Dane know about her and Reginald?  No one knew!  No one except....Sara!  Well, Stephanie didn't know for  a fact that Sara knew, but she always suspected that Sara had figured it out.

"Let's just say I have my ways.  You see, I have my own past with Jillian."  Dane began to wonder if it was wise to reveal his intentions to his girlfriend's cousin.  Then again, he and Stephanie were sort of kindred spirits.  They both went after what they wanted no matter who got in the way.  "What do you say we work together?"

"Work together for what?  And what about Sara?"

"Look, Steph, I know you still want Reginald and I know you're not the least bit happy about the fact that he's gotten engaged to Jillian.  I'm not happy about it either.  I refuse to stand back and allow Jillian to marry him!  Now, if we work together and you can get to Reginald and I can get to Jillian, we can both get what we want."

"B-but what about Sara?"  Stephanie's concern for her cousin's feelings were genuine.  Though they weren't close growing up, since Sara had been in Albanyville, they'd become like sisters.  "If you get Jillian back, where does that leave Sara?  I refuse to hurt her!"

"Stephanie, Sara's young and she's resilient.  She'll get over it and she'll move on."  He looked her right in the eyes.  "What's more important to you...protecting Sara or getting back Reginald?"  He watched as she grew uncomfortable and lowered her head.  "Just what I thought.  So, do we have a deal?  Are we going to work together to make sure that Reginald and Jillian don't get married?"

Stephanie hesitated for a moment before looking up at Dane.  "Okay, partner, what's your plan?"
