APARTMENT - LIVING ROOM
Stephanie began hesitantly and eyed her with trepidation.
"Clark? What in the
world has that horrible young man done to you?" Annabelle grabbed
Stephanie's had for strength. "I tried to warn you about him! A
mother is never wrong about these things!"
"Oh, I knew I shouldn't
have said anything!" Stephanie jumped up off the couch and ran across
the room as tears began to well up in her eyes. "You're just going
to tell me how right you were and how wrong I was!"
what in the devil did that boy do to you?" The worry that had begun
to creep into Annabelle's voice was evident as she quickly rose from her seat
and followed her daughter to the other side of the room. "Tell
Momma!" Tears began to stream down Stephanie's face as she could no
longer suppress the pain that Clark's betrayal had caused. "He was
only using me! He was working with that snotty witch Helen Van Dyne to
embarrass me and ruin what little good name I have left!"
"He...he tried to force
himself on me...."
"Oh, Stephanie, he
didn't!" Annabelle's face began to flush with anger. How dare
Clark Saxon abuse her daughter! How dare he disregard her feelings as part
of some vile scheme on Helen's part.
"I-it's okay, Momma, I
didn't...I didn't let him do anything." Stephanie took a deep breath
as she tried to calm herself. "He said he'd gotten carried away and
that he didn't mean to pressure me. I believed him."
"Stephanie Elaine Lake,
how many times have I told you that you should never trust a man. Any
man!" Annabelle laid a gentle hand on her daughter's shoulder as a
show of support. "You know that men are ruled by their own carnal
desires. That's where we women have power over them. We can use
their own desires against them to get exactly what we want."
"Momma, not all men are
like that!" Stephanie's thoughts drifted for a moment to Patterson. He was about as far from her mother's opinion of men as he
could be. Patterson wasn't the type of guy to let his own physical urges
overrule his sense of decency. He was way too upstanding for that.
"Well, apparently this
Saxon boy has managed to prey on your youth and innocence in an attempt to get
what he wanted. And, from what you've said, he was quite
unsuccessful." Annabelle paused to think as she tapped her lower lip
with her finger.
"And Helen, too!"
Stephanie reminded as she tried to wipe the tears from her eyes. "It
was all a scheme to get back at me for what happened at Reginald and
party. Helen wanted to use Clark to humiliate me. I found out about
it and confronted him."
"And what happened?"
"He said that he'd tell
everyone how easy I was! He said that he'd convince everyone on campus
that I was some wanton girl who could be anybody's that asked!"
Stephanie sunk down into a chair and buried her face in her hands.
"I'd never be able to show my face in this town again! Granted, I'm
far from a saint, but I'm nothing at all like he wants to make me out to
Annabelle muttered to herself with a sneer as she began to pace slowly around
the room. "I refuse to let that little weasel hurt my
baby!" With an angry, determined look in her eyes, she turned to face
her daughter. "You just leave this to me. I'll take care of
"W-what are you going to
do?" Stephanie's eyes grew wide with worry. She knew her mother
could be quite ruthless when pressed.
"That boy has no idea how
deep the waters that he's swimming in are!" She smirked
slightly. "I'll make him regret ever crossing the Lake family."
