Stephanie Lake800 W. Rose St. Apt #3, Albanyville, IL"Stephanie, why won't you tell me what's bothering you?" Annabelle Lake asked as she gently placed a hand on her daughter's shoulder.  "Maybe if you talk to me, I can help you.  I'm your mother, that's what I'm here for!"

Stephanie Lake eyed her with nervous apprehension.  Could she really confide in her mother about Clark Saxon's schemes with Helen Van Dyne?  Could she tell her about Clark's dastardly threats to ruin her name and reputation?

"I...I don't know," Stephanie muttered and then quickly looked away.  "I...I don't know if I should say anything."

"Stephanie!  Talk to me!"

She turned to look at her mother as tears began to well up in her eyes.  Maybe if she did confide the truth in her, she could help.  Maybe...

Albanyville General Hospital"There you are!" Francis Callison exclaimed as she walked towards Dr. Fred Rutherford as he stood at the nurses' station.  "I've been searching this hospital for you."

"What are you doing here?" he asked as he leaned in to give her a quick kiss on the cheek.

"Well, Maggie is off at her Fall Dance and I just got bored sitting around the penthouse with Mother and Dorothea, so I brought you some dinner."  She pulled a medium sized wicker basket from behind her back and sat it down on the counter.  "I thought that, maybe, if you had time, we could have a nice little dinner."

"I...I'd enjoy that," he smiled as he took her by the arm and led her down the hallway towards his office.

Francis Callison"So, how are you?  It looks like those bruises are starting to heal up very nicely."  Francis paused and touched him gently on the cheek.  "I still can't believe that some thugs just attacked you on the docks for no reason!"

"They had plenty of reason," he grumbled as he quickly pulled away, his jaw still tender from the attack.  "Everyone needs money these days.  Not everyone is lucky enough to have a job.  They've got to get what they need wherever they can get it."  He just couldn't let Francis know that he'd really been beaten as a result of his gambling debts.  If she learned the truth, surely she would suspect his true motives in his romantic pursuit of her.

"Well, it still doesn't make it right!"  She eyed him closely and realized that the entire matter still disturbed him, so she decided not to press the topic further.

"And how are your divorce plans coming?" Fred asked as he worked to change the subject.  "I hope you're not having second thoughts?"

"No, I'm still divorcing Charles."  She hung her head as she thought of her troubled marriage and all the heartache she'd had to endure.  "I can't...I can't let him continue to make a fool of me."

Dr. Fred Rutherford"Good for you!" he smiled as he put a supportive hand on her shoulder.  "I knew you'd do the right thing, so I took the liberty of arranging a meeting with my attorney friend.  He can get you everything you deserve out of this divorce."

"T-thank you, Fred.  You've been so good to me throughout all of this.  I just don't know how I could ever repay you."  She smiled at him warmly.  Oh, if Charles could only treat her with the same respect and regard.  If only Charles could be as supportive and loving to her as Fred was.

Silently, Fred smiled to himself.  Oh, don't worry, he thought, you'll repay me much more than you could ever imagine.

800 W. Rose St. Apt #3, Albanyville, IL"Momma..." Stephanie began hesitantly and eyed her with trepidation.  "It''s Clark."

"Clark?  What in the world has that horrible young man done to you?"  Annabelle grabbed Stephanie's had for strength.  "I tried to warn you about him!  A mother is never wrong about these things!"

"Oh, I knew I shouldn't have said anything!"  Stephanie jumped up off the couch and ran across the room as tears began to well up in her eyes.  "You're just going to tell me how right you were and how wrong I was!"

"Stephanie, what in the devil did that boy do to you?"  The worry that had begun to creep into Annabelle's voice was evident as she quickly rose from her seat and followed her daughter to the other side of the room.  "Tell me!"

"He...he...oh, Momma!"  Tears began to stream down Stephanie's face as she could no longer suppress the pain that Clark's betrayal had caused.  "He was only using me!  He was working with that snotty witch Helen Van Dyne to embarrass me and ruin what little good name I have left!"

"He...he tried to force himself on me...."

"Oh, Stephanie, he didn't!"  Annabelle's face began to flush with anger.  How dare Clark Saxon abuse her daughter!  How dare he disregard her feelings as part of some vile scheme on Helen's part.

Stephanie Lake"I-it's okay, Momma, I didn't...I didn't let him do anything."  Stephanie took a deep breath as she tried to calm herself.  "He said he'd gotten carried away and that he didn't mean to pressure me.  I believed him."

"Stephanie Elaine Lake, how many times have I told you that you should never trust a man.  Any man!"  Annabelle laid a gentle hand on her daughter's shoulder as a show of support.  "You know that men are ruled by their own carnal desires.  That's where we women have power over them.  We can use their own desires against them to get exactly what we want."

"Momma, not all men are like that!"  Stephanie's thoughts drifted for a moment to Patterson.  He was about as far from her mother's opinion of men as he could be.  Patterson wasn't the type of guy to let his own physical urges overrule his sense of decency.  He was way too upstanding for that.

"Well, apparently this Saxon boy has managed to prey on your youth and innocence in an attempt to get what he wanted.  And, from what you've said, he was quite unsuccessful."  Annabelle paused to think as she tapped her lower lip with her finger.

"And Helen, too!" Stephanie reminded as she tried to wipe the tears from her eyes.  "It was all a scheme to get back at me for what happened at Reginald and Jillian's party.  Helen wanted to use Clark to humiliate me.  I found out about it and confronted him."

"And what happened?"

"He said that he'd tell everyone how easy I was!  He said that he'd convince everyone on campus that I was some wanton girl who could be anybody's that asked!"  Stephanie sunk down into a chair and buried her face in her hands.  "I'd never be able to show my face in this town again!  Granted, I'm far from a saint, but I'm nothing at all like he wants to make me out to be!"

Annabelle Lake"Clark Saxon," Annabelle muttered to herself with a sneer as she began to pace slowly around the room.  "I refuse to let that little weasel hurt my baby!"  With an angry, determined look in her eyes, she turned to face her daughter.  "You just leave this to me.  I'll take care of Clark Saxon!"

"W-what are you going to do?"  Stephanie's eyes grew wide with worry.  She knew her mother could be quite ruthless when pressed.

"That boy has no idea how deep the waters that he's swimming in are!"  She smirked slightly.  "I'll make him regret ever crossing the Lake family."
